There are 4 horses total on the farm. They are my 4 geldings and I absolutely adore them. They are just family leisure riding horses these days and will be teaching the new generation of little homesteaders how to ride. We have Tuff who is a smoky black overo, Duke who is a red overo, Tex the cremello quarter horse, and Sampson the buckskin tobiano. They mostly just enjoy loafing around and munchi
Lowline cattle
We chose to have a smaller line of cattle to be able to raise them with less overhead costs for feed, be able to process smaller carcass sizes at home, have them easier to handle for one person, and use them as dual purpose milk/meat cattle. We currently have Tille and Red who are both expecting AI calves this June if all goes well. We plan to retain any heifer calves and grow out bu
Swine
We currently raise heritage cross on the farm. We have a mix of hereford, berkshire, hampshire, and Red wattle hogs. We chose larger heritage breeds due to faster growth rates and larger farrowing numbers. The breeds we picked generally retain pretty healthy maternal instincts as well so it allows us to farrow without the use of crates. We currently run a micro farrow to finish program with
Dairy sheep
We currently have two ewes dedicated to founding our dairy flock. They are awassi/east fresian and awassi/east fresian/finn crosses. They are exposed to our Finnsheep ram for spring lambs. We can expect 1/2 to 1 gallon daily of milk per ewe and plan to make this our main source of dairy since the feed conversion for sheep is much lower for dairy than for a full size dairy cow.
Registered Finnsheep
We have a small flock of registered finnsheep that we use for fleece, milk, and market lambs. Finnsheep are known for their desirable fleece and the fact that they commonly produce 3-5 lambs per lambing instead of 1-2 like most other breeds are known for. Our finnsheep ewes are exposed to our ram for spring babies. We will also be milking these ewes and can expect similar, but
Meat Rabbits
We have a herd of meat rabbits dedicated to providing meat for the freezer and pelts for tanning. They are mixes of Californians, Silver Foxes, and New Zealands. We breed for carcass quality and growth rates. Did you know it takes 6 times more feed to produce 1lb of finished beef product verses 1lb of finished rabbit product? That's a fantastic feed conversion rate and the turn around
